The Sixty-Third Session
April 2, 2022, Campaign: As the ground quakes, evil wakes
The Party explores more of ARN's mansion, and wins a poetry slam battle. Then we find ARN, and the statue that ARN is carving. The Party nearly dies in the process.
Table of Contents
Last session
We're still in the City of Setton, in the mansion of ARN, the artist. Winifold let us in, and told us that we need to find ARN before the next morning. We explored the ground floor and got seriously damaged by its inhabitants, before going up to the second floor and meeting a painting who intercedes with bits of the house on our behalf.
From the Kitchen
We debate where to explore next.
One door out of the kitchen leads into the hallway, so we open and examine that door to learn more about how the painting-door opens. It's the same mechanism as the floor above: A small inset doorknob in the painting unlatches it and slides it to the side.
The Dining Room
The other door out of the kitchen is a swinging door. Through it is a dining room, with no other doors apparent. There's a hearth on the east side, and a large table set for eight places. Sideboards on the west side, with glasses and bottles.
Percival asks the ladle, "When's the last time anyone ate in here?"
The ladle offers him the mummified thumb, and he understands that it's been "some time". He gives the thumb back to the ladle.
The sideboards are six feet tall, and on the south side of the room, Jerry discovers that one of the bottles doesn't move quite right, like it's fixed to the shelf. After some time manipulating it, the cabinet swings into the wall to expose another room.
The study
Jerry and Ryltar ask the painting if he's willing to intercede with the denizens of the study on our behalf, but he's running out of spell time. So we escort him home.
Jerry makes a speech to the room, explaining our motives.
Nothing happens.
She and Percival explore the room. The books on the shelves are art books, covering the whole span from basics to expert techniques. Sketches of works in progress, planning sketches. A rough drawing of something like the Mazarin Venus, unclothed. Scrawled phrases, brainstorming notes and doodles.
There's also a short hallway, heading back to the main hall. Pasted to the wall are scrolls of writing: poetry. The arched ceiling and walls are floor-to-ceiling covered in poems.
The wall turns a corner, and comes to a 20' square room with a small stage on the south wall. Hanging from wires and string are more of the poetic art, now interspersed with musical notation.
There's also a door, leading back into the hallway. Jerry starts to handle the door, and some of the papers begin to crinkle.
Jerry explains to the room that we're here to find ARN, not to steal from the house — but the ink is lifting off the papers and the papers are lifting off the strings.
- Round 1.
- Percival makes a rousing speech about friendship, trying to read lines from the papers that pass him. He rolls a natural
20for33persuasion. Most of the paper stops its aggressive movements. - Two ink blots in the room tries to blind Jerry and Percival, but they are not blinded.
- Two other ink blots try to attack, but fail.
- Salris, in the study, calls down the hall into the poetry slam room: "We really don't want to hurt you!" There's some reaction.
- One of the pieces of paper absorbs some of the ink, and it enters her space, to attack her. But it cannot overcome her armor.
- Another piece of paper absorbs ink and makes a whirlwind attack. Jerry and Percival both take some poison damage from ink in their paper cuts.
- The remaining two pieces of paper do nothing.
- Jerry casts Web, to immobilize the paper. She speechifies a little.
- Ryltar asks what's going on; tries to tell the papers down the hall that nothing is going on.
- Vurguron, scared by the flying paper noises, takes a moment to recompose himself.
- Percival makes a rousing speech about friendship, trying to read lines from the papers that pass him. He rolls a natural
- Round 2.
- Percival reads the paper stuck in front of him: The words are heavily obscured by the ink and webbing, but he reads it. And with a natural
20on his Persuasion roll, and a non-natural20on his dexterity save, he is able to move freely through the webs. He reads it aloud. - One ink blot is restrained by the webs.
- One ink blot is not, and disappears among the webbing.
- The remaining third ink blot tries to escape the web, and fails.
- Ryltar repeats what Percival said, making the poem into a badly-heard round.
- The paper swarms are all but one restrained. But they try to draw away from us.
- Jerry says, "If you all behave, I'll let the web drop and you all can go back to being art." She steps away from the paper swarm that encompassed her, and the paper doesn't make an attack of opportunity.
- Percival reads the paper stuck in front of him: The words are heavily obscured by the ink and webbing, but he reads it. And with a natural
The papers stay where they are, and Jerry drops Web.
Ryltar asks Percival how he's so good at this persuasion thing. He went to school for it, naturally! But he's not from the College of Persuasion.
Percival opens a pocket of his pocket of useful things, and finds a locket of silvery hair. He ties it onto a piece of holed paper, and compliments the paper on how it looks.
Jerry composes a short rhyming couplet in the traditional Orcish style, and writes it down on her book, and then tears the leaf from the book to attach it to one of the ceiling strings. The papers in the room look at it, and seem to accept it as one of their own.
The other door from the study leads to a circular room, with a single stone pillar in the center. The walls are covered in paintings of the outdoors. The clouds don't move and the grass doesn't wave.
Ryltar sends dancing lights up the room, into the sky. The column is plaster; the ceiling is 10 feet up like any other room on this house. There's a heavily-traveled path in the grass on the floor.
"Do you think if you walk around the pillar, you come out someplace else?" asks Jerry. She gives an end of rope to Ryltar, and walks around behind the pillar. She comes out through the same door, with the rope trailing behind her. Nothing really happened with her 10 Charisma save.
Ryltar investigates the room's walls, and with a natural 22 Investigation and a 26 on his Charisma save, he investigates the flowers. The flowers give and reset when pushed. He pushes them around, but nothing happens. He doesn't know what the code is; there's four sets of five flowers, with five colors of flowers.
Percival enters the room, and discovers that with every step he takes, the temperature of the room drops. Percival doesn't see his breath freeze, and Ryltar doesn't feel it. But as Percival walks around the pillar, he shivers with cold, and Ryltar notices his affect: Percival feels quite cold. Ryltar doesn't perceive the temperature drop.
Percival now understands that the height of the flowers and grass on the wall has no bearing on the room's meaning. It's just about color. He walks about the other direction and gets colder. He steps out into the study and the spell fades.
At Jerry's suggestion, Vurguron enters the room, going the opposite way from Percival. The grass gets higher and the way gets wider. He makes it all the way around and his friends are now towering over him.
We just see a regular-size Vurguron. "Is it hot or cold, Vurguron?"
He looks up and shouts, "I don't know if it's hot or cold! There's no temperature change! But you're huge!"
The rest of the party doesn't know what happened.
Jerry walks in the same direction that Percival did, and no effect takes. She turns to the Party and says, "I don't feel anything—" she has the feeling that someone is saying the same things on the opposite side of the pillar from her. When Ryltar says he didn't hear that effect, she hears the same effect on his voice. She leaves the room, and the effect fades.
It's weird that an artist might have something like this random-effect room.
Ryltar spends some time looking at the room, and looking at the papers in the study, and he discovers the number of petals in each flower is either 4, 5, 6, or 7, and each color of flower has one of each petal count. He walks around trying different combos. 4567 of blue: the blues stay down. 4567 of green: they stay. 4567 of purple: they stay. 4567 of yellow: they pop out. So blue green purple yellow white: they stay depressed, and a door opens into a new room.
The library
All walls are covered in bookshelves, with a desk in the center. There's a second level, but no ladder. There's a door on the ground floor and on the second level, leading out into the hall.
We enter to the smell of old books and extinguished candles. The shelves aren't just books: there's mementos and jars and stuff. We make the usual speech, and nothing happens.
Into the underground
We go back to the kitchen, down the trapdoor. We follow the path down a long and twisting passage, and come to a ladder that ends up in the library.
So we go back to the gazebo, and follow the route we hadn't taken. It leads to one ladder, half-descended from the ceiling, a short twist, another ladder, and then opens to a larder: clay, glass bits, a 3'x2' marble block, and stairs leading up. And there's a ramp leading up to a barred storm door, locked and chained and blocked with stuff.
Jerry doesn't want to tangle with the clay golems again, so we elect to cautiously take the stairs.
Another storage room
We come up into a room with a couple of visible doors. It's a storage room. There's crates and bits of masonry.
We hear a soft tinking of hammer and chisel. And a feminine voice humming a sweet, alluring song, coming from one door.
Jerry knocks on the door.
There's a feminine gasp. The tool sounds stop. A faint whisper comes through the door, but we're unable to make it out. A hoarse voice says, "I am not expecting anything, my lady."
"Winifold the art dealer sent us, to look for ARN, because Winifold had become concerned at ARN's absence," says Jerry loudly through the door.
"Begone from my place," says the masculine voice.
"We'll go," says Jerry, "But you should know that Winifold worries about you."
"Begone from my house! It will not hold back any more!"
"We're going, we're going." Jerry steps away from the door.
The voice: "If they are here, we must hurry," says the feminine voice. "I must be free," she says. Ryltar makes a door-kicking motion.
We get the sense that this is the sculpture, which has charmed him.
There's no keyhole, but there's a gap at the bottom of the door, and with the hand mirror, Jerry peeks through to see a male figure working at the feet of a stone sculpture.
Jerry casts Silence on the statue, and opens the door.
In the marble workshop
We a mostly-finished visage of a fey, stone woman, moving about as much as she can with her feet unsculpted. The male half-elf at her feet wears a blousy open shirt, a golden chain around his neck, a flop of dirty-orange hair, stubble, gaunt, bags under their eyes, sallow.
Jerry and Percival make Charisma saves. Percival passes; Jerry falls under an effect which requires her to move directly towards the statue.
And in the back corner of the room is a stone figure with glowing eyes, a glowing red emblem emblazoned in its chest. It stands up and glares at us hostilely.
A Shield Guardian and a Stone Lorelei
- Round 1.
- Vurguron makes to enter the room, and with a natural 20 saves against the charm effect. He approaches to within 5 feet of the statue, and examines the statue. With a
10he sees only a fine figure of a woman. - The statue is unhappy. She reaches out her hand to Vurguron, who now regards her as his one true love, for richer or poorer, to be heeded and protected.
- Ryltar moves where he can see in the room, and casts Slow into the room, affecting ARN and the two statues. ARN tries to counterspell and Ryltar counter-counterspells. The statue is unaffected. ARN fails. The armor fails. But Ryltar has become charmed, and moves next to the statue. The motion effect fades.
- Salris Eldritch Blasts the statue, uncharmed.
- Jerry is moved to approach the statue, and does so. She grapples ARN and drags him out of the room, out of line of sight of the statue. The statue swipes at her as she leaves, but doesn't pierce the armor.
- The armor approaches Ryltar, and stabs at him, bouncing off of his Mage Armor. At the end of its turn, the armor is no longer slowed.
- Percival throws his boomerang at the armor, but it bounces off.
- ARN, held by Jerry, outside of the Silence, casts Cone of Cold, aiming at Salris, Percival, and Ryltar. Percival Counterspells at 5th; ARN would counter-Counterspell at 3rd — but he is Slowed!
- Vurguron makes to enter the room, and with a natural 20 saves against the charm effect. He approaches to within 5 feet of the statue, and examines the statue. With a
- Round 2.
- Vurguron looks to his lady for direction; she points at his companions in the hallway. With all his loyalty to her, what does he do? He walks away, towards the hallway.
- The lady, unable to cast, makes two SLAM attacks Ryltar, who subtly casts Shield to block her hammering attacks.
- Ryltar Dimension Doors to the stairwell.
- Salris, within line of sight, passes a Charisma save against being charmed, and then makes three Eldritch Blasts against the statue, hitting thrice for
31force. He steps out of the sightline. - Jerry drags ARN into the basement, three steps into the room. "Winifold sent us here to save you from your art." His eyes are glazed, bloodshot.
- With Vurguron blocking the door, the armor tries to shove him out of the way, and succeeds. It reaches out with a glowing hand to grab Percival's head, and Banishes him. The armor is now concentrating.
- Percival is incapacitated in a harmless demiplane.
- ARN tries to cast a spell against SLOW, and succeeds in casting Teleport. They disappear from the basement and pop back to the statue's feet.
- Round 3
- The armor has pushed Vurguron off to the side. Vurguron can't see anyone but his allies: The armor, the statue, and ARN. He examines the statue.
- Ryltar finishes heading downstairs and regroups behind Jerry.
- Salris follows Ryltar down.
- Jerry quaffs two healing potions, giving two potions of Greater Healing to Salris
- The statue remains there.
- Percival is incapacitated in a harmless demiplane.
- ARN continues chiseling, slowly.
-
- Vurguron remains at his lady's feet.
- Ryltar chugs his healing potions for a bit of health.
- Salris likewise, to get back to his current maximum HP of
37. - Jerry goes up the stairs to whack against the armor: The first attack hits and breaks the armor's concentration. Percival reappears. The second attack hits as well, for a total
21bludgeoning. Its breastplate is dented. It's a giant stack of health points, meant to defend. It's gonna be really hard to kill. She yells to Percival, "Get down here!" and she goes back down the stairs. - One of the armor's dents pops out. The armor takes two swings at Percival, dealing him some damage.
- Percival disengages and tumbles down the stairs, drinking a greater healing potion.
- ARN continues chiseling, slowly.
- Jerry realizes that ARN's movements were lethargic to begin with. Lacking in energy. Weak, even for normal people. We don't think that Vurguron will be able to finish the statue if we kidnap ARN.
- Round 5
- Vurguron continues to worship the statue. He sees the statue angrily mouth words: it would be shouting at ARN if anyone could hear.
- Ryltar stays below, focusing on that Slow spell.
- Salris waits as well.
- Jerry holds a Dash to ARN until she hears that Percival has Hold Monster.
- The armor regenerates a little health. Its dent pops out with a pong.
- Percival goes up the stairs and casts Hold Monster, and just barely succeeds.
- Jerry runs up the stairs, and lands next to ARN.
- ARN, with a natural 20 and a disadvantaged 21, shrugs off the effects of Slow.
- Round 6
- Vurguron continues worshipping.
- The statue looks at Jerry, with a glow behind her eyes, and Jerry is stunned by Stunning Glance for two rounds.
- Ryltar comes up the stairs, squeezes between the armor and the doorframe, and re-casts Slow on all the enemies.
- Salris swings at the armor, landing a critical hit with the Beautiful Khopesh:
2d8 + 7 = 11plus4d6 = 19fire from Arterial Ignition for a total of30, with another critical hit and another Arterial Ignition for11and11for22, then attacks with the Whip of Wounding for1d4 = 2damage, and a Wound. - Jerry is stunned.
- The armor saves against the Wound but takes
1damage from it before it disappears. It regains some health. It remains Held, and Slowed. - Percival maintains his concentration on Hold Monster, and whacks the armor with his rapier, for
10piercing. Then he backs out of range. - ARN is still slowly chipping away.
- Round 7
- Vurguron continues worshipping.
- The statue stuns Ryltar for two rounds. She is no longer slowed.
- Salris continues attacking the armor, for
10slashing plus another critical hit29slashing and Arterial Fire plus the Whip of Wounding for1slashing and a wound. - Jerry is still stunned.
- The armor takes
4necrotic damage from the wound, then heals, breaks Hold Monster and is still Slowed. - Percival can't cast Hold Monster again. He casts Tasha's Hideous Laughter on it. It falls prone, incapacitated, and begins to laugh: "Hrrrrn. Hrrrrn. Hrrrrn."
- ARN continues hammering.
- Round 8
- Vurguron continues worshipping.
- The statue stuns Jerry again.
- Ryltar is stunned.
- Salris moves into the room a little, and Eldritch Blasts the statue for
33force, chipping away at her health. - Jerry is stunned.
- The armor continues laughing. "Hrrrrn. Hrrrrn. Hrrrrrn."
- Percival continues concentrating on Tasha's, and then uses his Mage Hand to grope around to pull the chisel from ARN's hand. He succeeds in yoinking the chisel. He pulls the chisel back to his hand.
- ARN is still slowed.
- Round 9
- Vurguron is now aware that Salris has attacked his beloved with Eldritch Blast. He is unhappy, but Ryltar is between them. Vurguron pushes past the stunned Ryltar, and does nothing.
- Ryltar is still stunned.
- Salris does another Eldritch Blast cannon, missing once, for
18, and she's looking pretty chapped. - Jerry shrugs off the stun.
- The armor stops laughing. But it is still prone, and is still slowed.
- Percival tells the armor another joke, and it starts laughing again. "Hrrrn. Hrrrn. Hrrrn." He throws the chisel down the stairs.
- ARN gets up to follow the chisel. ARN steps out of Jerry's reach, and she does
12bludgeoning to ARN. Something glows red on ARN's chest, and the armor twitches.
- Round 10
- Vurguron is before the stunned Ryltar, and now stands before Salris.
- The statue tries to stun Jerry, and fails.
- Ryltar is stunned.
- Salris does some Eldritch Blasts at the statue, hitting once for
14. - Jerry whacks away at the statue for
31damage. An arm has fallen off. - The armor continues laughing, slowly.
- Percival enters the sculptuary and picks up his boomerang, pushing past Vurguron in the doorway. He attacks the statue with the boomerang, and misses.
- ARN is still slow, and still tries to run. ARN gets bonked by Jerry for
11damage, and the armor twitches again. ARN tries to climb around or over Vurguron, but fails.
- Round 11
- Vurguron grapples Salris, preparatory to choking Salris, but fails: Salris is a real slippery bastard.
- The statue tries to stun Percival, and succeeds.
- Ryltar gets right up against the statue and Cone of Colds her at sixth level. With advantage, she fails with a
13on the constitution save, and takes38cold damage. He pushes the statue over, and she falls over, knocked prone. The entire stone slab falls over. She takes no damage from falling over, but is almost cracked. - Salris, at disadvantage because Vurguron is in the way and the target is prone, casts Eldritch Blast on the statue, hitting once, exploding the statue's head like the Death Star.
- The Stun effects go away. Vurguron is no longer charmed. ARN is no longer charmed?
ARN shudders; his desperate intent becomes more self-controlled.
Next Session
- We need to tell ARN some things. Jerry is still maintaining Silence.
- Ryltar needs to do something for the missionaries of Denier.
- Was Seamus poisoning the whole bar? Is that why he wasn't drinking? Is Salris' brother also a bearer of the curse that afflicts Salris? Or is he just part of Rezzik Brazzik now?
- What's up with Salris' Celestial dagger?
- We know how to trap the Jester, with Magic Circle
- What's going on with the stars? Are Ryltar's theories about colors and significant plot-relevant things' colors correct?
- How can the Mummy Lord be defeated?
- Determine how to resolve the Eta'el-Kerjes plot
- Remember to un-petrify Ockoh in the Ice Lord Wint's Lair, so that we can give him the foodservice contract for the Irregular Inn
